Aquilegia formosa, commonly referred to as the crimson columbine, is a native ephemeral with a wide native distribution from Alaska to Baja California. This species prefers moist habitats and can be seen flowering from early to mid summer depending on location.
Nodding flowers are pollinated by a variety of organisms, but primarily by butterflies, hawkmoths, and hummingbirds. While much floral diversity exists, many species are still closely related, allowing substantial hybridization to occur in locations where species overlap.
