Mahonia aquifolium, often known as Oregon grape, is the state flower of Oregon, owing its common name to the small clusters of dark berries that resemble grapes.
An evergreen shrub, often with an undefined shape, M. aquifolium has pinnately compound leaves with 7-13 stiff and spiny leaflets.
In recent years, the genus Mahonia was lumped together with the genus Berberis, however, it is still referred to by its old name (Mahonia) in the horticultural trade.
