Pelargonium auritum is a species in the Geranium family (Geraniaceae) that is native to the Southwestern Cape. Different varieties of this species can be found throughout the Cape, but P. auritum var. auritum, which is found in the Western Cape, is characterized by dark purple petals. It occurs from Clanwilliam to Addo and Port Elizabeth. This species flowers from September to January in a wide range of habitats.
The genus Pelargonium is a familiar one in the horticultural trade. Garden store “geraniums” are also part of the genus Pelargonium. P. auritum is one of about 280 species in the genus, and is quite unique from commonly cultivated species that you might find at your local nursery.
