Gladiolus watermeyeri, sometimes locally known with the common name soetkalkoentije (sweet little turkey flower), is a perennial geophyte in the Iris family (Iridaceae) that is native to the sandstone slopes of the Northwest Cape.
G. watermeyeri is a very fragrant species of Gladiolus, emitting a strong scent of vanilla-frosted lemon cake. It has incredible red to maroon venation that contrasts with its off-white petal color.
The genus name Gladiolus is derived from gladius, a short sword of ancient Rome used by Roman foot soldiers (gladiators) during combat. Pliny the Elder is said to have contributed to the naming of this genus in reference to the leaves resemblance of the gladius.
