Ferraria uncinata, also known as spinnekopblom or spider flower, is a deciduous perennial in the Iris family (Iridaceae) that emerges from a long-lived underground corm.
F. uncinata can be found growing in sandstone outcrops and other semi-dry locations. It’s also sometimes found in open ground on granite-derived gravel or in deep sand. In its native habitat, it can be seen flowering during the rainy winter season, giving off a display in August and September.
The specific epithet “uncinatus” means “hooked,” referring to the hooked tips of the leaves and spathes. This trait however is not always prevalent and can sometimes be seen in other species of Ferraria.
