Ribes sanguineum, also commonly referred to as red flowering currant, is a native of the Pacific Northwest. It’s a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub which grows in and around open forests, mostly on the west side of the Cascade Mountains.

R. sanguineum is one of about 120 species and is the only genus in the family Grossulariaceae, which also includes gooseberry and currants. The specific epithet “sanguineum” comes from the Latin “sanguis”, meaning “blood” in relation to the red color of R. sanguineum flowers.

Flower color can vary in nature and some cultivated selections even have white flowers!
