Nuphar polysepala, also known as the great yellow pond-lily, is a species of “water-lily” native to western North America. The geographic range of this species is wide, existing from northern Alaska to California and east into the Rocky Mountains. It is commonly found in shallow muddy ponds where its rhizome is buried in the mud and its leaves extend above, floating on the water.

N. polysepala was used by many indigenous tribes for food and medicine. It could be eaten cooked or boiled as a vegetable and provided a significant source of carbohydrates.
